10 November 1954, Adelaide, South Australia ADDRESS: PO Box 642 Byron Bay, NSW 2481 Australia EDUCATION: Secondary 1967-1972: Gilles Plains High School, Adelaide, SA
1974-1976 Bachelor of Sciences at the Flinders University of South Australia: Earth Sciences, Biology, Chemistry, Psychology Biology major. 1978-1979 Part-time completion of BSc degree 1980 BSc Honours Thesis in the School of Biological Sciences: "An Experimental Investigation of the Physical and Biotic Influences on the Niche of Bembicium Nanum". This project was undertaken to determine factors influencing the distribution and behaviour of a marine intertidal gastropod. Field studies were carried out on the rock platform at Marino Rocks, South Australia, and supplemented by work in a tidal tank which I designed in the laboratory. EARLY EMPLOYMENT: 1973 Sales Assistant and Ordering Clerk at Beck Book Company, Adelaide. 1975 Assistant Personnel Officer, Mater Misericordiae Hospital, Sydney. 1976 Clerk, Systems Department, John Martins, Adelaide Corsetier, Ladies' Lingerie department, John Martins, Adelaide
Technical Laboratory Assistant in the Dairy Branch of the Department of Agriculture Research Station at Northfield, South Australia. My primary duties were to assay bacterial levels in milk and regularly return the information to the dairy farmers. 1979 Research Assistant in the Psychology Department, School of Social Sciences, the Flinders University of South Australia. 1982 Waitress in the Capri Pizza Bar, Adelaide. 1983-1986 Technical Assistant Grade II in the Anatomy Department of the Flinders University School of Medicine. 1987-1990 Promoted to Research Assistant in the Anatomy Department of the Flinders University School of Medicine. Duties involved were: designing and carrying out experiments examining the anatomy of nerve tissue using immunohistochemical and electron microscopical techniques; photomicrography and darkroom work; preparation of figures and manuscripts for publication; technical training of junior research staff, graduate students and visiting scientists; and management of laboratory protocols and files on computer. This position terminated when my supervisor relocated to the University of Melbourne. 1991 - 1992 NH & MRC Research Assistant in the Flinders University School of Medicine, located in the Division of Surgery at the Repatriation General Hospital, Daw Park. I was required to function as a Research Officer, setting up a program of double-labelling immunohistochemistry for neurons in the human urinary tract, designing and equipping a new laboratory, training and supervising a Technical Officer, and assisting in the writing of manuscripts. I continued a hands-on involvement with the technical procedures of immunohistochemistry, microscopy, photomicrography and darkroom work throughout the project. 1992 - 1994 NH&MRC Research Assistant Level 4 in the Department of Clinical Pharmacology, Flinders University. I established the immunohistochemistry, photomicrography and laboratory maintenance for a new central nervous system neurotoxicology laboratory, and assisted with the design and setting up of a new brain slice pharmacology system. I designed, carried out and analyzed experiments on rat brain slices to determine the neurotransmitter and neuropeptide content of nerve cells in the midbrain and pons that had been treated with neurotoxins. My additional tasks were the technical training of an Honours student and to assist with the preparation of grant applications, scientific publications and materials for teaching purposes. Higher Education Officer Level 5 in the School of Biological Sciences, Flinders University. I provided technical support for research staff who employed patch clamping to study ion channels in plant root membranes. This involved the cultivation and care of a variety of terrestrial and aquatic plant species and the isolation of protoplasts from their roots. I was responsible for managing the laboratory equipment, chemical stocks and solutions. I assisted with the practical teaching of undergraduate students on an annual field trip, and assisted honours and postgraduate students in the laboratory. 1997- 1998 NH&MRC Research Assistant in the Department of Anatomical Sciences, University of Queensland. I worked with my supervisor on several scientific communications on the prefrontal cortex of primates, including a review of the neuronal connectivity of the region. I was involved in a project to set up international collaborations on aspects of the prefrontal cortex that relate to psychiatric disorders in humans. In addition to the brain work, I accompanied my supervisor on several field trips to Heron Island Research Station to contribute to his ongoing project on the spinal nerves of sharks and rays. My duties there included boat handling, SCUBA diving, animal capture and behavioural observation, technical laboratory work and the training and supervision of junior staff and students. This position ended in January 1998 with the end of the NH&MRC grant funding that supported the projects, and the retirement of my supervisor. 1998 I began to implement a change of career, to express my creativity as a writer, artist and photographer. Because this process will take some time, I have been employed in several part-time positions at the University of Queensland: May-August 1998: Research Assistant in the Department of Chemical Engineering developing methods for the culture and testing of marine cyanobacteria which cause problematic blooms on the Great Barrier Reef. August 1998- September 1998: Problem-Based Learning (PBL) tutor of first and second year medical students in the Graduate Medical School. This involved giving two or more interactive, case-oriented tutorials per week, in which the development of autonomy, self-directed learning and group skills by the students are paramount objectives. September 1998 - January 1999: Research Assistant in the Vision, Touch and Hearing Research Centre, to write up and publish work on the primate prefrontal cortex. 1999 Problem-based Learning Tutor to first year Medical students in the Graduate Medical School of the University of Queensland.
